Les Anciens les attribuaient au poète Anacréon, qui vivait au VIe siècle (d’où le titre du recueil Anacreaonta), mais il est probable qu’ils lui sont postérieurs. Les premiers sont des chansons de banquet (symposion) célébrant les droits et les plaisirs de l’ivresse, le quatrième est un éloge de la cigale, insecte associé à la nature, à l’été et au chant, le cinquième un poème d’amour.
