Le roi est désigné par Dieu pour exercer le gouvernement du royaume. En France, sa légitimité est confirmée par le sacre dans la cathédrale de Reims, en Angleterre par le couronnement en l'abbaye de Westminster. Les plus hauts dignitaires ecclésiastiques attribuent ainsi au souverain un surcroît d'autorité. Celui-ci fait, en retour, le serment de défendre l'Eglise. Cette alliance ne se dément pas au cours de la période étudiée.
