Ses fondateurs, Yaacoub Sarrouf et Fares Nimr, sont des membres actifs du cercle intellectuel constitué autour du Collège syrien protestant, ouvert en 1866 avec une classe de 16 étudiants. Cet établissement prendra le nom de l'Université américaine de Beyrouth en 1920. Une telle institution s'inscrit dans les initiatives qui accompagnent ke mouvement de la Nahda émergeant autour de Beyrouth, du Caire et d'Alexandrie et touchant les élites de langue arabe. Le choix de la spécialisation est à la fois volontaire et dicté par la contingence.
