Mais quels rapports entretiennent-ils avec la douleur et la souffrance ? Faut-il souffrir pour être performant ?
Les témoignages qu'apportent David Douillet et Serge Simon sont unanimes: de par ses valeurs et son idéologie, le milieu sportif intègre et banalise les sensations de douleur et de blessure. A force d'efforts et d'entraînements, la douleur devient même un indicateur de progrès : avoir mal, souffrir fait partie du contrat. Résistants à la douleur, les sportifs de haut niveau en deviennent des surhommes surprotégés car ils ont le devoir d'user de leurs corps sans jamais l'user.
Mais la banalisation de la souffrance rend difficile le repérage et la reconnaissance des pathologies psychologiques et physiques. Reconnues comme normales malgré le cadre légal, certaines blessures échappent à la prise en charge sanitaire alors que ce qui est d'urgence sanitaire chez le non-sportif l'est tout autant chez le sportif de haut niveau. Mais peut-on remettre en cause un système qui fonctionne ?
